A Campground in the Heart of Town: Exquisite Gourmet Food and a Starry Sky in Shibetsu, Hokkaido

We constantly find ourselves chased by the hectic pace of daily life, staring at our smartphone screens before we even realize it. Swallowed by an endless wave of information, we slowly lose our peace of mind. Wanting to step away from it all for a while, we visited Shibetsu, a town located at the eastern edge of Hokkaido at the base of the Shiretoko Peninsula.

Our destination for this trip was "Shibetsu Umi-no-Koen Auto Campground." It is a highly popular spot that offers the best of both worlds: it's surrounded by rich nature, yet conveniently adjacent to the town. The first thing that caught our eyes upon arrival was the vast, endless sky and ocean. With an unobstructed view stretching out before us, just standing there and taking a deep breath felt like the fatigue accumulated in our hearts was gently melting away.

Chasing Fish and Finding Inner Peace

One of the great charms of this campground is that you can enjoy fishing and exploring the rocky shores on the beach right next to it. Casting a line while feeling the sea breeze and listening to the sound of the waves is a truly special experience. Of course, the excitement when a fish bites is amazing, but the time spent simply facing nature without a single thought in mind was a luxury in itself.

While exploring the shore, we peered into the crystal-clear water to look for tiny sea creatures. Discovering these small lives—the kind we usually overlook in our daily routines—captivated adults and children alike. Wading in the cool seawater made us feel as though we had traveled back to our childhood days.

A Sweet Treat and a Magical Evening

As evening approached, the sky gradually shifted colors, ushering in a magical twilight hour. We started a campfire while watching the landscape dye in shades of orange. Once caught, the firewood began to burn, making a comforting crackling sound. The only sounds surrounding us were the crashing waves and the crackle of the fire. A peaceful time, far removed from the hustle of the city, flowed by.

After playing to our heart's content, we took a break in front of our bungalow. We treated ourselves to "Shibetsu Milk Ice Cream," a local favorite. It is rich and creamy, yet leaves an incredibly refreshing aftertaste. Eating it out in nature makes it taste even more extraordinary. Sharing ice cream with someone special while listening to the whisper of the wind—such a simple moment somehow felt incredibly rich.

The Ultimate Seafood BBQ

The long-awaited dinner was a seafood barbecue, showcasing the rich bounty of Shibetsu’s oceans. We generously grilled fresh scallops, salmon, and crab on the wire net. The savory aroma rising from the grill alone raised our expectations, and one bite was enough to bring a wide smile to our faces.

The scallops were thick and intensely sweet; drizzling them with Shibetsu’s specialty 鮭節しょうゆ (salmon-flake soy sauce) and topping them with butter made them so delicious that we couldn't help but smile. The salmon was perfectly fatty and absolutely exquisite. Savoring fresh seafood unique to Hokkaido was truly the highlight of the trip. While experiencing the powerful, natural flavors of the ingredients, it was a meal that made us want to deeply thank nature for its blessings.

A Starry Sky That Changes Your Perspective

However, what stole our hearts the most on this trip was the night sky.

The moment the sun went completely down, we dimmed the campfire and looked up at the sky. We collectively gasped. Countless stars were glittering, completely filling the night sky. In the city, you can only count a few, but here, they shone brightly enough to crowd the heavens.

Faced with the overwhelming scale of the universe, a thought welled up inside me: "How tiny of an existence am I?" At the same time, I was filled with a profound sense of peace, thinking, "And yet, at this exact moment, I am certainly alive as a part of this beautiful world."

The beauty that the Shibetsu night sky showed us felt like it held a mysterious power—one that reminds you of important feelings forgotten in the busy routine of daily life. Even after returning to our ordinary routines, it remains a precious treasure that will continue to illuminate our hearts.

Convenience Meets Great Nature

Furthermore, the charm of this campground goes beyond just nature. With fully-equipped bungalows and a wide selection of rental gear, even camping beginners can stay here with peace of mind. Because BBQ equipment and cooking utensils are readily available, you can pretty much show up empty-handed.

Additionally, the town of Shibetsu spreads out right next to the campground, featuring shops where you can buy fresh seafood and meat. You can easily pick up any extra items you need, so you will never feel any inconvenience.

To wrap up the day, we headed to a nearby hot spring (onsen). The thick, silky water felt just like a natural beauty serum, warming us down to the core. Soaking in the bath while slowly soothing the fatigue from fishing and exploring was a moment of pure bliss.

Reconnect with What Matters

What this trip reminded us of is that Japan still holds so much incredible, undiscovered nature. Clear skies and seas, rich seafood, comforting hot springs, and a breathtaking starry sky—Shibetsu has it all. You don’t have to travel to a faraway foreign country; right here in Japan where we live, there exists great nature so beautiful that it can shake your soul and make you feel completely reborn.
